It All Starts With a Wall

DESIGN

As the intrinsic relationship between theory, analysis and design will be addressed in each publication, the ‘design’ part will present the architectural intervention proposal, which is based on the theoretical premises and the (in)direct result of the findings and insights the spatial analysis offered.  The project intends to spatialize the rhizomatic nature of the invisible infrastructure of smuggling operations to allow the local smugglers to create their independent cross-border settlements along the riverbeds. The complex, obscure, and confusing structure of designed premises helps the smugglers avoid law enforcement forces that currently deter them from operating. Here, the ‘Wall’ becomes a multifunctional device that delivers various life-essential features. The ‘Wall’ is gradually constructed like an assemblage, with materially distinct layers that provide different functions, adapting as a settlement emerges and more demanding needs appear.
